Tie-breaks
For indivisible prizes, such as trophies, championship titles, free entries, etc., the following tie-break systems are used to break ties among players with the same final score.For individual placements:
- Modified Median Tiebreaks (add the scores of your opponents, disregarding the least significant (usually the lowest-scoring opponent); any games unplayed by your opponent are adjusted to count as a ½-point).
- If still tied: Solkoff Tiebreaks (add adjusted scores of all opponents)
- If still tied: Cumulative Tiebreaks (add your cumulative scores after each round)
- If still tied: Cumulative of Opposition (sum of the cumulative tiebreaks of all your opponents)
- If still tied: Game/10 or Game/5 or similar playoff. (This is the only method used to break perfect score ties, such as 5-0 or 6-0).
For team placements:
- Cumulative (sum of the team's 4 top scoring players' cumulative tiebreaks).
- If still tied: Modified Median (sum of the Modified Median tiebreaks of the team's four top scorers)
- If still tied: Solkoff (sum of the team's four top scorers' Solkoff tiebreaks)
- If still tied: Cumulative of Opposition (sum of the cumulative tiebreaks of the opponents of the team's four top scorers)
- If still tied: Game/10 or Game/5 or similar playoff. (This is the only method used to break perfect score team ties).
Rating
The tournament will use the February 2020 Official USCF Rating List. No tournaments which end after the January 15th 2020 should be included in the February 2020 Official USCF Rating List. Unofficial ratings at www.uschess.org will usually be used for players who are not rated in the February 2020 USCF Official Rating List.
The Tournament Director reserves the right to assign estimated ratings for players with non-USCF-ratings.

Refunds
If you had to cancel, we will keep your entire entry fee as a credit towards the entry fee for next year's tournament. If you wish to request a refund instead, please email us at director@gnyscc.com by March 7th. There is a $15 service charge for each player refunded. We will try to complete all the requests for refunds (less $15 service charge per player) within five weeks after the request was received.
We forward membership dues to the US Chess Federation (USChess) and they decide independent of us if they are willing to issue refunds.
Withdrawals
We request at least one hour's notice if your are not going to play your game. Players who forfeit their games by not providing proper notice are also subject to a fine up to the amount of the entry fee.
If you have registered in advance and you are not going to attend the tournament, please make sure that you inform the Tournament Director about this at least one hour before the game time. We do not want to pair you, causing your opponent to wait for you not to show up and then have you lose your game on forfeit. To contact the Tournament Director, please send an email to director@gnyscc.com (with a copy to webmaster@gnyscc.com) and indicate your name, USCF ID number and which section of the tournament you have entered. Beginning 7:30 pm Friday January 31st, please also call the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott Hotel at 718-246-7000 and ask for “the Chess Tournament.” Please do not leave any messages with the hotel switchboard, as they might not be delivered in time to prevent you from receiving a forfeit loss on your game.
Byes
- A ½-point bye is an unrated draw without play or an opponent. If you are unable to play a round, you may request a ½-point bye.

The limit is two ½-point byes for all sections.
- If you wish to take a ½-point bye before arriving at the tournament, such as round 1 or rounds 1 and 2, you can request this by email to director@gnyscc.com or byes@gnyscc.com
- If you wish to get a ½-point bye after you begin play in the tournament, this should be requested in person at the tournament site.
- We would like at least one hour notice for bye requests. In addition, the deadline for requesting ½-point byes is before Round 3.
- If you missed the deadline to request ½-point byes, you can still skip a round by giving at least a one hour notice, but you will receive a 0-point bye instead.
- If you do not tell the tournament director beforehand (we request one hour's notice), you receive a forfeit loss for that game and risk being withdrawn from the tournament.

Changes in 2020
Players will not be permitted to use electronic scorekeeping at GNYSCC
starting in 2020. They will be required to use either a scoresheet that
is provided on site or their own personal scorebooks or scoresheets.
If a player would like to request an exception to use an electronic scoresheet for accessibility reasons please reach out directly to the Event Manager of GNYSCC at eventmanager@gnyscc.com PRIOR to the event. Be prepared to provide appropriate documentation that can be reviewed.
Starting this year, the tournament rooms will be CLOSED to spectators while games are in progress. Only players, staff and officials with the tournament are allowed in the tournament rooms. You can see the moves from some of the top games live as we broadcast them on our DGT Boards to our website.
